“It’s a stinker.”

The comic Jorma Taccone (“MacGruber”/”Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping”) directs and Nick Kocher and Brian McElhaney write the hollow screenplay for this unwholesome horror comedy. It’s an oddly funny but absurd English language remake of the 2021 “The Trip,” a Norwegian film by Tommy Wirkola.
The obnoxious failed commercial director Dan (Jason Segel) is married to the grating failed off-Broadway actress Lisa (Samara Weaving) and have an unpleasant dysfunctional relationship. Dan secretly plans on killing Lisa because she cheated on him, and he takes her to upstate NY for a week-end retreat to a remote cabin owned by his salty father (Paul Guilfoyle) to carry out his dastardly plan. Lisa also has secretive plans to kill Dan because he’s a controlling jerk. But their plans change when they find hiding in their attic three escaped prisoners–Pete (Timothy Olyphant}, Todd (Keith Jardine} & Allegra (Juliette Lewis), the prison guard who falls for the killerPete and helps the convicts escape. The couple now must work together to survive.
The problematic film has an uneven script, a lead couple that has no chemistry together, and there’s not a character in it to care about. It’s a stinker, deserving kudos only for some good stunt work.
It played at SXSW.
