“Creepy horror pic that’s underwritten.”

Osgood Perkins (“The Monkey”/”Longlegs”) directs this style over substance creepy but not scary horror pic/serial killer film, that’s underwritten by Nick Lepard.
The couple of Liz (Tatiana Maslany), a snarky artist from the city, and the nerdy Malcolm (Rossif Sutherland, Donald’s son), a city doctor raised in the country, are at his family cabin in the Canadian woods outside of Vancouver for a romantic weekend holiday to celebrate their first month together.
During dinner, the couple are visited by Malcolm’s annoying sexist younger cousin, Darren (Birkett Turton), staying at the guest house with his non-speaking English, Eastern-European model date, Minka (Eden Weiss). After they leave Liz eats a slice of chocolate cake left by the caretaker, and she eats it only to please him even if she doesn’t like chocolate cake. A few days later Malcolm returns to the city on a medical emergency with a patient. When Liz is alone there’s a series of supernatural events that begin to leave Liz in the middle of a nightmare, as we learn the place has a long history of women experiencing supernatural bloody attacks in that house that goes back centuries.
In the end things get resolved, but it leaves us with a further mystery and only a visually satisfying film that’s still searching for a sensible plot.
