“Disappointing true heist story from Denmark.”
Reviewed by Dennis Schwartz
A disappointing true heist story from Denmark. It’s directed by Frederik Louis Hvid (“Enforcement”) and written by Anders Frithiof August.
The heist took place in 2008. The 71 million kroner stolen made it Denmark’s biggest robbery in its history.
The masterminds of the heist were the 30-something losing boxer and family man Kasper (Gutav Giese), who has a wife (Camilla Lau) and a 7-year-old daughter (Dagmar Madicken), and his ruthless, slick and creepy Moroccan criminal partner Slimani (Reda Kateb).
Slimani sets the boxer up with their other partner, the older, pragmatic Hasse (Christopher Wagelin). They rob the Copenhagen suburb of Glostrup, one of Copenhagen’s primary cash-handling operations, which does business with banks and other businesses.
The pic tells in great detail the efforts and strategies used by the gang to make their bold plan work.
The robbery itself was filmed in a single take, entirely from the inside of an armored van.
Unfortunately there were too many boring scenes over the details of the robbery (with many of the details just useless information), it’s pace was too slow, and it failed to be thought-provoking. On the plus side, it was competently made and its procedural setup took steps to make sure it got the real heist story right.
It played at the Toronto International Film Festival.
