Director Marina Zenovich (“Going Clear: Scientology & the Prisoner of Belief”/”Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired”) makes it a point to tell us repeatedly her celebrity star of her documentary, Chevy Chase, is an asshole and has a reputation for not being liked in showbiz circles. He lets us know he’s an asshole by dissing the director upon meeting her on the set before the start of the film and tells her off-camera she’s not as smart as him.
The title comes from the catchphrase Chevy used when he anchored the SNL segment of the Weekend Update.
The 83-year-old Chevy is one of the original cast members of SNL, whose insult comedy has given him an illustrious career that includes many hit films such as Fletch & Caddyshack, and success in clubs. But the arrogant comedian, in his senior years, has become so obnoxious, he’s no longer as popular as he was back in his prime during the 1990s.
Ms. Zenovich explores his miserable childhood as possible reasons for being such an asshole. She also shows us his better side as a good family man, loved by his wife and kids. If you’re interested in Chevy’s mystique, it does a fair job telling us some of the things that make him tick. My problem is I never cared for him, and the film only reinforced that.
