A scintillating documentary on the failed NYC mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner offering a closer look behind the scenes at his campaign in 2013, after resigning in 2011 as a Congressman because of a sexting scandal. It’s written and directed by Josh Kriegman, a former Weiner aide, and Elyse Syeinberg. They have free access to the troubled Weiner, and give us views on him that are fascinating and intimate. Though there are no new revelations, Weiner’s fall from grace is vividly captured on film as a real shocker. The pathetic Weiner also tries desperately to save his marriage with his forgiving wife Huma Abedin, a close longtime aide of Hillary Clinton.

When a second texting scandal pops up during the campaign, it’s like watching a train wreck. Weiner’s hubris knows no bounds. His combative campaigning makes for lively subject matter, as he comes out looking as someone saddled with deep-rooted psychological problems. Weiner’s vanity and weakness of character outreach his promising talents, and his damaging actions cause pain to him and those in close contact.
