Aaron Sorkin’s (“The Trial of the Chicago 7″/”Molly’s Game”) sequel to the 2010 “The Social Network” is a pressing story that tells how Facebook has not changed the world for the better even if it has given it more access and promises to make it better. It’s a follow-up to the David Fincher directed and Sorkin written film on its nerdy, arrogant founder Mark Zuckerberg (Jeremy Strong), who has since become an evil control freak growing the social media company from the Harvard campus to be valued on the world market at $250 billion dollars. It recently changed its name to Meta.
Sorkin writes with a funny and jittery style, that worked better in the earlier film.
Facebook’s young data engineer Frances (Mikey Madison), a Harvard grad, as a whistleblower in 2021, attacks the problem of hate speech on Facebook by contacting the Wall Street Journal investigative reporter Jeff Horwitz (Jeremy Allen White) to help an indifferent Facebook leadership team clean-up its ugly platform.
The reformer allies are up against the repulsive control freak Zuckerberg, a cold profiteer who cares only for the business-side of Meta.
The message film makes its significant points about what a creepy and untrustworthy business leader Zuckerberg is. It’s slickly done and heavy-handed. With so much news coverage on social media, its hot-take revelations are no longer fresh. But that doesn’t mean the filmmaker won’t make you pissed-off at the creepy Zuckerberg.
