The irreverent queer filmmaker Gregg Araki (“White Bird in a Blizzard”/”Kaboom”) directs his first film in 11 years that he co-writes with Karley Sciortino. The weird comedy/thriller for his admirers may signal a return to form even if the murder plot goes nowhere.
It opens with the 23-year-old Elliot (Cooper Hoffman) finding his dominatrix boss Erika Tracy (Olivia Wilde) floating face down in her home swimming pool. He’s questioned at the police station by 2 detectives (Margaret Cho & Johnny Knoxville) as a suspect.
Using flashbacks we look back when Erika first hired Elliot.
We learn that the dominatrix used sex to gain power over her recently hired and inexperienced assistant Elliot, who just graduated from college, has a sexless med student girlfriend Minerva (Charli xcx) and is aimless.
In Erika’s art studio, Elliot and the droll gay studio artist Zap (Mason Gooding) create a vagina made from chewing gum.
Erika sticks a dildo up Elliot’s ass and sexually degrades the gen Z-er to remind him never to forget about the importance of sex.
Everything in this raunchy satire is played for laughs.
I didn’t think Araki returned to his glory days in the 90s, but it might be funny enough for Araki fans.
It played at the Sundance Film Festival.
