“The question raised is can this billionaire be trusted to dismantle an unjust system if he benefits so much from it.”

The documentary bio-pic by Irish filmmaker Sinéad O’Shea (“Pray for Our Sinners”/”Blue Road: The Edna O’Brien Story”) is about the 40-year-old Fergie Chambers, a wealthy asshole, the heir to the American Cox Enterprises media empire. He labels himself a communist and starts a revolutionary collective in rural Alford, Massachusetts, in the Berkshires, where he provides free housing and a monthly income to a handful of commie activists.
Fergie finds America’s wealth inequality objectionable, even if he could be the poster child for the privileged class.
There appears to be something seriously wrong with him that makes him obnoxious and untrustworthy. We learn he was institutionalized for mental health problems as a child and has a history as a drug addict.
Fergie’s a polarizing figure who sometimes makes sense and at other times doesn’t.
The question raised is can this billionaire be trusted to dismantle an unjust system if he benefits so much from it.
Fergie’s a delusional eccentric who is good at making a lot of noise for the cause (sometimes on the right side and sometimes on the wrong side). But he’s unwilling to give up his inherited wealth for his beliefs and has backed the terrorist group Hamas.
We get a superficial look at him as he goes rogue from his stuffy family. I never felt I got to know him except to realize there’s obviously something seriously wrong with him. It’s also telling that he doesn’t live on the commune with his chosen people, but lives alone in a luxury apartment in Ireland.
It played at the Sundance Film Festival.
