Lauren Meyerling is the rookie director and co-writer with Mackenzieg Breeden of this formulaic but forceful coming-of-age drama that observes the relationship between a dying mother and her needy daughter.

The 22-year-old autistic and confrontational Margarita (Lillian Carrier), named after the drink, anxiously deals with her ailing mom, Sandy (Gretchen Mol), who has terminal cancer. With the impending loss of her provider and her father deceased, Margarita is forced to prepare for an independent adulthood. She does so by joining a youth team for a hobby-horse competition.

Her life is saved by joining the club, as she finds self-worth.

It’s an inspirational coming-of-age story that no one can dispute. I enjoy films better that have more going on for them.
